CHATHAM – Local oral surgeon Richard D. Riva is the latest member of the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry to be appointed by Gov. Chris Christie.

Riva, a Millburn resident, is a co-owner of Morris County Oral Surgery Associates at 3 Main St. in the borough, and in Chester.

The board licenses and regulates dentistry and its related professions in New Jersey. It licenses dentists, registered dental assistants, limited registered dental assistants, dental hygienists, teachers, interns, and residents studying dentistry.

Eight dentists serve on the state board, which is made up of 12 appointees, including one non-dental member of the general public. The board meets twice a month.

Riva’s four-year appointment is the latest in a long list of achievements in his dental profession.

He is a 1975 graduate of the New York University College of Dentistry and completed an oral surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1978.

He served in Germany as an armored cab officer in the U.S. Army Cavalry, and in the U.S. Public Health Service as chief of oral surgery at the Marine Hospital, Staten Island, NY.

In 1990, he was appointed as president of the Millburn Board of Health, and soon after served a chief of both the dental department and oral surgery at Overlook Hospital.

He is an attending oral surgeon at Morristown Medical Center.

Riva is a board certified oral surgeon and a fellow of the American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), serving as president of its New Jersey constituent in 1998.

He also served as president of the Tri-County (Morris, Sussex and Warren) Dental Society and the New Jersey Dental Association.

On the national level, Riva served on the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Council on Governmental Affairs, as a delegate to both the ADA and AAOMS House of Delegates and ran a national campaign as a candidate for ADA Vice President.

Riva and his wife, Sharon, reside in Millburn and have four grown children and nine grandchildren.
